Model Shipways The Abbott Downing
Company of Concord, New Hampshire built its first stagecoach in 1827. These
coaches were used for passenger and mail service between St. Louis and San
Francisco. Abbott produced coaches for both Wells Fargo and Butterfield
Overland Stage companies. Weighing over two tons, the coaches were solidly
built. The bodies rested on leather through braces - not for the passengers'
comfort, but to prevent injury to the horses. The wheels were made of
seasoned white oak to withstand the heat and the cold. Leather "boots" front
and back held mail sacks and luggage. Now you can build a historically accurate 1/12 scale replica of one of
these coaches. The kit includes Laser cut basswood and plywood parts,
beautifully cast Britannia Metal Fittings, Photo-Etched brass detailing,
opening doors, working suspension, and with the very detailed instruction
Manual with detailed illustrated plans, decals for the Wells Fargo or
Butterfield Overland Stage Companies, and a length of almost 14" long, and
9" tall when complete, this Stage will be a joy to assemble and display.
